However, the originally reported storm total of 65.1” for December 24-27, 2017, and monthly total of 121.3”-which would have been state records-were later corrected, after the State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) found issues in snow-total reporting and snowboard placement that appear to have inflated the totals (see the initial SCEC findings).Įarlier that year Chimney Pond, Maine, established a state record for greatest depth of snow when 94.0” was measured on February 16, 2017. The winter of 2017-2018 saw Erie, Pennsylvania set city snowfall records for the season (166.0”), the month of December (93.8”), and any 24-hour period (32.6”). Unlike the state precipitation records, there have been no state snowfall records established since 2017 of which I’m aware. had snow cover on December 2, the largest percentage in NOAA records dating back to 2003. The snow cover of 22” at Duluth, Minnesota, on December 1 tied with 1985 for the largest on record there on the first day of meteorological winter (period of record 1884-). Madison’s seasonal normal is 50.9” and record was 101.4” in 2007-2008. Madison, Wisconsin experienced its snowiest start on record (period of record 1884-), with 15.7” of snowfall observed at Truax Airport through November 23. How could I possibly be right when $54 million said I was wrong? How could human taste be a better barometer of movie quality than the success of a marketing campaign? Prediction: This weekend, more parents and their children will dutifully file into the idiotic wasteland of "Scooby-Doo" than will see the inspired delights of "Lilo & Stitch." That will be a shame. Take the kids to "Lilo & Stitch." I could see from the man's eyes that he was rejecting my advice. Take my word, I said I do this for a living. But, I said, there is a much better animated family film opening this weekend, named "Lilo & Stitch," that your kids are sure to like much more than "Scooby-Doo," and you will enjoy it, too. Yes, I said, because they've heard of nothing else all week. On Monday a man on an elevator asked me what I thought about "Scooby-Doo." I said it was a very bad movie. Lilo's anger and Nani's frustration is only the symptom of a larger structure, like community, that abandons its neglected children to fend for themselves in a world already precarious to them.If "Scooby-Doo" grossed $54 million in its first weekend, then if there is justice in the world, "Lilo & Stitch" will gross $200 million. Normalizing children to deal with their anxieties & pain on their own only deflects from those who add to that grief. Or Lilo having to look outside of this planet for a single bond to grasp. If only it were that easy, Nani wouldn’t have had to sacrifice her childhood to care for her sister. It characterizes grief as an isolated incident meant to be handled within, with no connection to the outside world. Governmental and communal structures impose an unfair paradox that children will never resolve in the wake of loss. Nani works several jobs to provide for Lilo. Whether it’s Lilo at six or Nani at 19, expectations become suffocating, often overwhelming. Lilo & Stitch, on a deeper level, becomes a disturbing commentary of the burden imposed on children. Whether it’s the social worker Cobra Bubbles, voiced by Ving Rhames, hoping to take Lilo away from Nani, or the other little girls in Lilo’s dance class bullying Lilo for her eccentric personality, structures of power reinforce their symptoms of trauma. Nevertheless, the same external powers only become an obstacle in their path to healing. Healing can only occur through the outside forces that Nani and Lilo try to rely on to survive. Viewers, especially children, understand that traumatic experiences don’t exist in a vacuum. Lilo & Stitch redefines trauma’s misconception as an exclusively internal experience and unveils its outward continuation. ![]() Chris Sanders’ and Dean DeBlois’ animated film Lilo and Stitch unravels the precarious nature of trauma in the lives of two young sisters, forced to grow up faster than most. After losing both parents in a car accident, Lilo is left in the care of her older sister Nani. The open roof renders the WZ305 highly vulnerable to overpressure damage, so nearby artillery, bombs, and rockets will often knock out the crew.Ĭompared to the ZSU-57-2, the upper glacis is significantly thicker at 45 mm of RHA compared to the original 13.5 mm. The paper-thin turret means that enemies with heavy machine guns or autocannons can mow down the turret crew and potentially knock out the tank with a single burst. While the upper glacis is now about as strong as a T-34, this level of protection does not amount to much at its rank. The WZ305 can dispatch light targets, clean up flanks, and clear the skies, making it a valuable asset throughout a battle. Firepower wise it enjoys a new DKY-1 airburst HE shell that makes it far easier to use against aircraft. The WZ305's hull is better armoured, though this adds about 3 tons to its weight, and has a slightly more powerful engine. Cosmetic differences include fender-mounted headlights, side skirts, and the retention of all five road wheels. The hull is developed from a later Type 69 variant, as opposed to the ZSU's chassis derived from the T-54. While outwardly similar, there are some differences. I dont know if devs want realism or prefer keeping the otomatic slightly buffed as it is, but it has critical flaws in the AA department (no missiles, tracers give away your position and bullets cant change route mid air. OTO just doesnt have magic antispall armor or a remote tuttet, virtually any shot at OTO can disable it ( giant breech, ammo ""shield"" and hull ammorack with ludicrous hull armor and 3/4 of the crew sitting in a giant manned turret without armor also easily oneshottable cause all placed near center mass) ![]() it cant have fast reload of 12 (iirc) APFSDS but just 3? ok so its a "nerfed" 2s38 (slightly more capable in the AA region) I mean, just balance it according to relistic features. This journey to Oz is not along a yellow brick road, but through a nuclear hellscape.Īnd yet, there is hope, and a message of perseverance. The trio never enter The Room, but do you really believe it exists? A room where all one's wishes come true, while living under a soul-crushing totalitarian regime? It's a pipe dream. One needn't look to extraterrestrials to have created such a place. In my view, The Zone and the journey to get to it simply represents life in the USSR - a wasteland in the literal and symbolic sense, one with hidden dangers everywhere, and whose rules defy logic, and may change in an instant. The scene where the stalker walks with her through a stark, desolated landscape, with their legless daughter on his shoulders, nuclear reactors in the background, and music playing that's reminiscent of Pink Floyd, is very powerful, and stuck with me. There are few actors, but each turns in a soulful performance, including the three leads but also the stalker's wife (Alisa Freyndlikh) - check out her late scene speaking to the camera, and while emotional, getting around to lighting a cigarette. Meanwhile, the stalker is severely disillusioned by the cynicism and impotence of these intellectuals. ![]() He wants to destroy the Room, recognizing that it will eventually lead to disaster in the form of absolute power granted to some lunatic, and how true this is. The physicist, on the other hand, fears being denounced by a fellow scientist, accused of disloyalty to the Party for personal reasons, which was a very real problem under Stalin. But if no one is going to read me in one hundred years, why the hell should I write at all?" He also describes being put through the wringer, at first thinking he will change the world with his words, and then finding out that the world has changed him, and will soon forget him, channeling the angst of Russian authors from Dostoevsky to Grossman. Furthermore, "It's impossible to write, thinking all the time of success or failure. The writer observes that to be effective, he must be tormented and unsure of himself, that is, the moment he thinks he's a genius and has it made, he's no longer a great writer. The dialogue is fantastic throughout the movie, and clearly shows the struggle of the intelligentsia in this 'brave new world' of Communism. I found that the pace and visuals of devastation to be meaningful, underscoring the bleakness of their lives, and allowing for the quiet of deeper thought. The film is Kafkaesque, and it's also slow and ponderous, too much so for some viewers. In this the film seems to deviate, and in more explicitly dark, introspective ways, from the original novel by the Strugatsky brothers (who as an aside, wrote some fantastic fiction aside from 'Roadside Picnic' - check out 'The Doomed City', 'Definitely Maybe', and 'The Dead Mountaineer's Inn' among others). The film is highly allegorical though, and while the trio face murky subterranean horrors, they don't seem to be of the alien kind, but within the mind instead, those associated with the existential condition, and living in a modern world under a totalitarian regime. The Zone is said to hold mortal dangers to those within it, and is also reactive to their presence, shifting in unpredictable ways. In it, a guide (a 'stalker', Aleksandr Kaydanovskiy) leads a writer (Aleksandr Kaydanovskiy) and a physics professor (Nikolai Grinko) through a mysterious area of devastation known as 'The Zone', in search of 'The Room', which holds the promise of making their deepest desires come true. A movie of uncommon depth, 'Stalker' is poetic, philosophical, and brooding - and certainly not standard science fiction fare. ^ "Blake Stone: Planet Strike! Just like Aliens of Gold and Wolfenstein 3D, the maps were designed using Tile Editor (TEd). The developers were limited by memory constraints and programming issues when trying to add additional digitized voices into the game, and ended up playing pre-existing voices from Aliens of Gold backwards. The game's working title was "Blake Stone: Firestorm". Moreover, using the 4X and 2X views (which marks enemies which may be morphing or cloaked) expends magnification power, which must be refilled in a manner similar to ammunition. As a tradeoff, the pushable walls leading to secret areas are marked on the minimap, but only when it is at 4X magnification, making its coverage too small to be of use in navigation. The removal of these features also makes it more difficult to determine possible locations of secret areas. ![]() Thus the player must overcome the distortions caused by the map rotation and can potentially get lost when retracing steps to a newly unlocked area.
